However, what makes Shakeology stand out are the superfruits, prebiotics, and probiotics it offers. Here are a few of the healthy ingredients from Shakeology’s long list:
- Whole coffee fruit
- Acerola cherry
- Yacon root
- Chicory root
- Digestive enzymes
- Pea fiber
The antioxidants found in healthy superfoods reduce the risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and even slow down aging.
If you don’t know what prebiotics are, they’re plant fibers that probiotics in your gut need to reproduce.
The prebiotics combined with probiotics and digestive enzymes found in Shakeology allows your body to digest food more efficiently, preventing stomach upsets. Studies have shown that probiotics reduce your chance of gastrointestinal diseases.
That said, Shakeology is a healthy, nutritious shake that can supplement your diet. However, drinking Shakeology is not an excuse to eat junk food!

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a single nutritionist that recommends replacing all of your meals with a single shake.
Shakeology does contain many different ingredients, making it a very nutrient-dense, but your body still needs real, whole food. That being said, replacing one meal from time to time is not a bad idea.
For example, I’m not a big breakfast fan. However, my mornings will often include Chocolate Vegan Shakeology and a banana. Sometimes I’ll also add some peanut butter into my Shakeology shake as well.
You can even mix Shakeology with oats, almonds, chia seeds, and some milk of your choice for a perfect, well-balanced breakfast. If you also don’t have any appetite in the morning, you can probably drink a shake to start your day with a healthy treat.
Also, a serving of Shakeology contains 17 g of protein, a decent amount your body can use for muscle protein synthesis. And having some probiotics and digestive enzymes first thing in the morning is also great because your body is ready to digest your brunch, lunch, and dinner later on.
However, why can’t Shakeology replace a meal if it’s healthy? In the simplest terms, it simply doesn’t have enough calories.
One Shakeology shake has only about 150 calories, which is less than an average candy bar. You can have a shake when you’re feeling hungry, and it’s okay to replace one meal a few times a week with Shakeology.
However, you shouldn’t have Shakeology instead of lunch every single day because you’ll end up in a caloric deficit, which is great for weight loss if that’s your goal.
So, the verdict is that you can have Shakeology if you have cravings for something sweet. It can’t replace your salmon salad for lunch, but it can replace a bag of potato chips.
Drink Shakeology Before a Meal To Lose Weight
If you drink Shakeology before having lunch with your extended family, you won’t eat nearly as much.
To be honest, I can’t control myself when it comes to huge meals. That’s why I’ve started drinking Shakeology whenever I expect a large dinner.
I don’t eat nearly as much food as I used to, largely thanks to Shakeology. Your brain receives a signal from your gut that you’re full, so even the most mouth-watering roast potatoes lose their appeal all of a sudden.

All right, so Shakeology contains 17 g of protein and all amino acids, so you can just drink that instead of a protein shake after a workout, right?
Well, it’s a half-decent post-workout shake, but Beachbody Chocolate Whey Recover is still a way better choice.

Best Shakeology Alternative
Ample Complete Meal Shake is a fantastic alternative to Shakeology.
It doesn’t contain the same long list of superfoods, but it has some other tricks up its sleeve. The main difference is the high-quality fats from coconut, sunflower, and macadamia nuts in Ample.
Shakeology has hardly any fats, which can be good or bad, depending on the rest of your diet.
Also, there’s a ketogenic version if you’re on a keto diet. Shakeology contains sugar, so it’s not keto-friendly.
Ample comes in large, nice-looking bottles, and one serving has 34 g of protein, which is double that of Shakeology. Similarly, Ample is more of a meal replacement drink than a post-workout shake.
Ample’s nutrient-dense formula has a few interesting ingredients, such as:

53% of the calories in Ample originally come from fats, so keep that in mind. If you’re in a calorie deficit, the additional calories can add up. So, you should only drink it as a meal replacement.
You can combine it with a low-calorie fruit like strawberries or watermelon, and you’ll prevent cravings throughout the day.
But if you’re trying to gain weight, having one or two Ample shakes daily as a snack is a fantastic way to build lean muscle.
Shakeology is an incredible meal or snack replacement that can supplement your healthy diet. Despite its high protein content, you should still go with a protein post-workout shake for muscle recovery.
And if you want an alternative shake, Ample is one of the best meal replacement drinks. It contains significantly more protein and fat than Shakeology, so it’s a perfect choice for weight gain.
However, I’d still recommend Shakeology over Ample overall because of the long list of superfoods. Ample and any other meal replacement shake don’t come close to that.
